The Joint Study Convention on East Asia Cooperation was held in Beijing, China on 30 October, 2005. The meeting was attended by about 50 experts and scholars in East Asia studies from ASEAN, China, Japan, Korea, and ASEAN Secretariat. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech.
At the meeting scholars exchanged views on East Asia economic integration progress, subject matters in the process of East Asian Community building and the East Asian Community roadmap, etc.
The experts and scholars affirmed the significant achievements of East Asia cooperation in the fields of trade, finance and banking etc. They agreed that East Asia community building should be conducted on the basis of ASEAN plus Three and with the aim of common development and prosperity of the countries in the region. They realized that East Asia studies should be strengthened, think-tanks be encouraged and given a full play and joint efforts be made for further and comprehensive development of East Asia cooperation. The convention adopted the summary report in the end.
The Joint Study Convention on East Asian Cooperation was proposed by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao at ASEAN plus Three Summit last year. It was meant to pool the academic resources in the region to discuss the key issues of East Asia cooperation.
